Project Idea
Based on the idea of the Active Alerter app on Nominet Trust
Help the elderly to live independently instead of having full-time care
Some technologies exist for this purpose but have serious flaws
Alarm pendants – Require the old person to press the button himself/herself
Home security systems – Very costly and the motion detectors may not be reliable
Monitoring services – “The system can’t directly notify [family members] when there’s an emergency, but by keeping track of [the elderly’s] regular patterns, it can indicate when something might be wrong
Does not require the old person to do anything to activate it
Able to contact family members whenever there is a need
Functionalities
Remind the elderly to take medication by sounding an alarm
Sound an alarm if the old person has not moved for a long period of time
Switch different modes by different period of time
Contact family members through SMS in cases of emergencies
Failure to stop the alarm by pressing a button
Falls or bumping into objects
Send a sleep summary to family members to inform them whether or not the elderly slept well
Three functions shown in menu: set medication, sleep mode period, and phone number
Methodology
3-Axis Digital Accelerometer (MMA8452Q) (I2C serial communication)
Day Mode: Checks for lack of and large changes in acceleration
Night Mode: Records lack of acceleration
Timers and clocks (Real Time Clock)
Record time of inactivity
Time to take medication
Total time of alarm ringing
Neoway M590E GSM/GPRS Module DIY Kit (UART)
Send SMS to family members
LCD Touch-screen: Display menu and type of medication to take
Buttons (interrupt): Stop the alarm and choose from menu
Buzzer (PWM): Sound the alarm
Using Powerbank for power input
Demonstration
General:
Set Phone Number
Day Mode:
Reminder for medication
Falls/Hit something
Inactive Alert
Night Mode:
Sleep Summary
Limitations
The device is big and heavy with its current components
Requires the living place to have signal in order to send out the SMS
Inactivity may not be an accurate measurement of the elderly encountering health issues
Use of sensors for heartbeat and respiration
Inactivity during night mode may not be a good representation of sleeping well
Use of brain waves sensor
